Description:
The vision of the Mental Health Foundation is to make mental health everybody’s business. The Foundation is committed to creating a society that respects human rights and is free of discrimination. One of the ways the Foundation works towards this goal is by helping organisations and community groups to reduce stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.

The Mental Health Foundation has a team to help organisations and community groups across the Auckland region to learn more about mental health and illness, human rights, and to develop and implement inclusive policy and practice. These services are offered free of charge as part of the Like Minds, Like Mine programme to counter stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.

Like Minds, Like Mine is a public health programme aimed at reducing the stigma and discrimination faced by people with experience of mental illness in New Zealand. The programme is funded by the Ministry of Health and guided by the Like Minds National Plan.

Around the world, stigma and discrimination is one of the major barriers to a person's recovery. But changing attitudes and behaviour in society is complex, so the Like Minds programme works on a variety of levels to try to achieve this, including television advertisements and work with individual communities and organisations.

Also
Almost half (47%) of all New Zealanders will experience some form of mental illness at some time during their lives. Mental illness may affect you, someone close to you, or someone you work with. People with mental illness can recover, but the greatest barrier to recovery is discrimination.

Discrimination can take many forms and may be knowingly or unknowingly done, even by people who want to help. For this reason it’s important for all organisations and community groups to consider their approach towards mental health and illness.

The Auckland Like Minds, Like Mine team wants to help organisations and groups to create mentally healthy environments, respect human rights, promote equality, and to recognise and counter discrimination.

Our team is well qualified and has extensive experience working with organisations and agencies. The Mental Health Foundation is New Zealand’s largest and longest-standing non-government mental health advocacy and promotion organisation. As part of the Foundation we have access to:
• A wealth of information and resources
• The Foundation’s wider staff and their expertise
• Cultural expertise with our multicultural staff
• Extensive links throughout Aotearoa New Zealand
